Experience & Activities
Ellen Davies is a senior ecologist who specialises in Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) within AtkinsRéalis, a world-leading engineering and environmental consultancy. She has worked in the ecological consultancy field for over 6 years and, during this time, has enjoyed seeing how BNG has gone from a largely unknown concept to an important part of our ecological assessment process. Ellen is an active member of both the AtkinsRéalis BNG Network and the AtkinsRéalis Landscape and Ecology BNG working group.
Ellen grew up in a family full of keen gardeners and nature/animal lovers, which nurtured her love of the natural world. Fond memories include weekly pond dipping after Sunday lunch in her grandparent’s garden pond, learning about all the different creatures it held, and regular after-school trips to her local wildlife park.
Her specific interest in plants was kick-started during her Environmental Science degree – completing a plant science module, habitat surveys, and a taxonomic collection. This interest was keenly supported by her grandmother and they continued to spend walks and holidays together looking at wildflowers and getting very excited when coming across something new/unusual!
In the words of David Attenborough, Ellen believes,
“It’s surely our responsibility to do everything within our power to create a planet that provides a home not just for us, but for all life on Earth.”
Ellen thinks that BNG is a step in the right direction for giving green/natural spaces more weight in the face of development.
